A reminder not to leave your pet in the car
One of our favorite brands is the Fromm Family pet foods. Aside from a fabulous array of formulas, including many grain free options for dogs and cats, the thing we like best is the Fromm dedication to food safety. In fact, we feed Fromm to our own pets for that very reason.
Rather than reiterate all of the things that Fromm does well in the food safety area, we have re-printed what they have to say about it below. The following is reprinted from the Fromm website at https://frommfamily.com/about/food-safety/
We own and operate two manufacturing facilities in our home state of Wisconsin — located in Mequon and Columbus. Every bag of Fromm dog and cat food originates from one of these facilities. Owning and operating our plants allows us to have full control over the quality and safety of the products we produce. This encompasses everything including, sanitation and pest control, facility maintenance, employee training, sourcing of ingredients, in-house lab analysis, preparation of meat and produce, formulation and blending, processing, packaging, warehousing and distribution.
Part of the overall commitment we have to you — the pet parent— and to your pet is our dedication to producing high quality, safe and consistent pet foods. We have made food safety our highest priority and have implemented HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points) programs in our manufacturing plants. HACCP is a comprehensive preventative program used to identify vulnerabilities and establish documented controls to alleviate the potential issue.
Our Approved Supplier Program ensures that ingredients have been tested by our suppliers and are secure and unadulterated until they are received at our plants. The ingredients are sampled and not unloaded until our own on-site testing labs can verify the safety and integrity of the received load. In process testing is also done at our labs to confirm our formulations are complying with guaranteed analysis as stated on our labels.
All of our packaged pet foods are sampled and tested by an outside lab for pathogenic bacteria. The product is held and cannot be shipped until lab results are obtained and the product is cleared. This is the final step that ensures that all of our pet foods are wholesome and unadulterated.
Every package of Fromm product you find on retail shelves includes a unique batch code which allows us to trace each product through processing, formulation and back to the individual ingredient supplier.
Compliance to federal, state and local regulations is of the utmost importance. To ensure this compliance we perform audits of our procedures, programs and documentation on a regular basis. We are also subjected to random and periodic inspections performed by outside agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
Dogs are a very important part of our family and dental care is very important for your dog. They live, eat and sleep with us. When we are feeling sad, dogs comfort us or cheer us up. They have strange ability to make us laugh, even when we are having a bad day. They help us keep healthy, by taking them for walks in the fresh air, so we get exercise also. Our cherished companions love us unconditionally. It is our responsibility as owners to make sure they live as happy and healthy life as humanly possible. This is very little, for the happiness they bring into our lives. Dog dental care products.
There is nothing worse than your wonderful dog breathing on you with bad breath. The most common cause of this is the tartar buildup on its teeth or gum disease caused by untreated tartar. Tartar is composed of small, decomposed food particles. Oral bacterial love and thrive in this and form plaque. The oral infections and plaque cause the dogs gums to recede and become infected, giving your dog bad breath.
You can prevent this from happening by brushing your dogs teeth every day and taking him to the vet for regular checkups. Manufacturers make special toothbrushes and toothpaste just for dogs. Never use human toothpaste on your pets, as it could harm them. There is flavored toothpaste available that dogs usually like so this makes brushing their teeth a little easier. For smaller dogs there are finger brushes, which you put the toothpaste on. The vets, pet stores or pet supply places often carry these.
Another great way to keep your pets teeth healthy is giving them dental chew bones with enzymes to help prevent plaque and bacteria. Rawhide is another product that is good for your pet’s teeth. Many rawhide chews stop plaque forming because they contain enzymes. Chicken, fish, turkey and pork bones are dangerous to your pet as they splinter, so these are definitely a no-no. There are dog cookies on the market made specifically to prevent tartar buildup in dogs.
Slurp N’ Fresh and Nature’s Dentist are convenient products that fight tartar and plaque build-up and also help the breath. Slurp N’ Fresh is simply added to your pet’s drinking water and Nature’s Dentist is sprinkled on the food. These products then take care of the rest for you. Both are all natural.
No matter how well you clean your pet’s teeth or what chews you give your dog, as they age most will need a dental cleaning performed by your vet. Never put this off, as it is extremely important to the health of your animal. Cleaning your dog’s teeth is very similar to having our teeth cleaned except they sedate your pet. Because of today’s technology, this procedure is extremely safe and the vet uses monitoring systems for the safely of your dog.
Our London store carries a complete line of dog dental care products or dental products for cats.
Many new dog owners quickly realize that the cuddly ball of fur they brought home is actually a pooping and peeing machine in disguise! This new dog poop and pee machine produces many loads per day, it doesn’t necessarily care where it goes, and the owner has to clean-up after all of that! AND, the cuddly ball of fur will continue to do its business for the next 10-20 years!!
This article is intended to help you deal with the practical challenges of cleaning up after dog poop and pee. Hopefully we will make your life easier as you pick up after the dog poop each and every day over the next 10-20 years.
First and foremost, if you feed your dog high quality, nutritionally dense food you will get less coming out at the other end. This will also make for a much healthier dog and just like people, dogs are what they eat. The feeding instructions on a bag of high quality dog food, for example, will typically be 3-4 cups per day for a 100 lb dog. The feeding instructions on a low quality dog food, by comparison, will typically be 10-14 cups per day. Granted, the lower quality dog food will be cheaper but, given the amount of fillers that your dog can’t utilize in the 14 cup per day food, do you really want to pick that up in your back yard every day!?
Every dog owner should pick up its dogs poop every single time!!! WITH EMPHASIS! Unfortunately, some don’t and it is you and I that end up stepping in it! Here are some simple tricks or products that will help with the dog poop pick-up:
1) The Newspaper Trick – bring a newspaper with you on your next walk. When your dog has squatted and is now fully committed to having his/her poop, slide the newspaper underneath and let your dog go on it. When done, simply fold the newspaper up with the poop inside and continue your walk to the nearest garbage can. Yes, your dog will look back at you for the first couple of times wondering what the heck you are doing with that paper, but remember, the dog is already committed to pooping and they aren’t going anywhere!! Many people ask we’ve trained our dogs to poop on the paper, but really, there is no training at all!
2) Doggy Bags – most owners prefer using doggy bags. In this case, try to use bio-degradable pick-up bags as there will be a lot of them over the years and it adds up to quite a bit of plastic going into the landfill. Earth Rated offers a full line of modestly priced bio-degradable pick up bags, from bags with handles to those on a roll with a handy dispenser. They are available in a Lavender scent or unscented.
3) Poop Scoop – is used mainly around your backyard as they are too cumbersome to be bringing with you on walks. Many different garden tools or shovels will work and cheap pooper scoopers can be found in many pet, hardware or big box stores.
What do you do with all of that dog poop you’ve been scooping up around your yard? Well, most of the time it goes out with the garbage but some municipalities are now banning the practice or are encouraging dog owners to compost the waste. This isn’t a bad idea as you can imagine how much space dog poop takes up in our limited landfill areas, or what a mess it makes when a full bag of poop breaks as the garbage-man is throwing it into the truck!
The Waste Manager Dog Waste Disposal System is a small septic tank that is installed into your backyard to hold and break down the dog waste that you pick up each day. It uses digestive enzymes to naturally break down the dog poop so that you don’t have to throw it in the garbage. Refill digestive enzymes are also available at Petacular at Waste Manager Natural Clean Up Tablets.
Rolling in the Poop
Believe it or not, many dogs will roll in dog poop given the chance, or in the smelliest pile of fish entrails or similar garbage that they can find. We’re not exactly sure why they do so or enjoy it so much, but assume that it is related to their basic hunting instincts and how they smell downwind to potential prey (i.e. a dog hunting for lunch is better off not smelling like a dog). Often dog owners are caught completely by surprise, or don’t immediately realize what their dog is actually rolling in until too late! If it happens to you, and it probably will, we recommend Earthbath Pet Shampoo, the highest quality line of all-natural, bio-degradable pet shampoo. Each formula cleans safely and gently while leaving your pet’s coat bright, shiny and smelling better than ever before.

The Beneficial Oil
Virgin coconut oil is the richest natural source of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs), which is a medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA). Most of coconut oil’s health benefits come from medium-chain fatty acids. Medium-chain fatty acids consists of caprylic (C8:0), capric (C10:0) and lauric (C12:0) acids.
What is so Great About Medium-Chain Fatty Acids?
Antioxidant and Vitamin E
|The most abundant medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) found in coconut oil is lauric acid, which is considered responsible for many of coconut oil’s health benefits. Coconut oil is about 50% lauric acid, and the only other abundant source found in nature is in human breast milk. The value of lauric acid has been widely studied and has shown multiple health benefits. When the body metabolizes lauric acid, it is converted by the body to monoglyceride monolaurin. Monoglyceride helps support a healthy body functions.
Dr. Mary Enig, a Ph.D. nutritionist/biochemist and one of the world’s leading authorities on fats and oils, states, “Lauric acid in coconut oil is formed into monoglyceride monolaurin in the human or animal body. Monolaurin is the antiviral, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal monoglyceride used by the human or animal to destroy lipid coated viruses such as HIV, herpes, cytomegalovirus, influenza, various pathogenic bacteria including listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and protozoa such as giardia lamblia. Some studies have also shown some antimicrobial effects of lauric acid.”*

|The unsaturated oils in some cooked foods become rancid in just a few hours, even at refrigerator temperatures, and are responsible for the stale taste of left-over foods.
Coconut oil that has been kept at room temperature for over a year has been tested for rancidity, and showed no evidence of it. Because of this, coconut oil has been shown to have powerful anti-oxidative effects. It is well established that dietary coconut oil reduces our need for vitamin E, and may provide a significant source of antioxidants. As an antioxidant, it is 50 times more potent than Vitamin E, 15 times more potent than carrots, and 300 times more potent than tomatoes.

|The benefits of coconut oil for pets are not novel news. In October 2005, The Whole Dog Journal wrote an article about virgin coconut oil and its multiple health benefits for pets, called “Crazy About Coconut Oil”.
The article discussed using the right type of coconut oil (unrefined or “virgin”), which is made from fresh coconuts, and is the oil that has culinary and health experts excited. For more information, read The Whole Dog Journal article, “Crazy About Coconut Oil“.
